Welcome to Their Eyes Were Watching God

Zora Neale Hurston, the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God was a moderately successful African American woman of the Harlem Renaissance. She wrote many other novels as well as this one. She also went to many schools including: Barnard College, Morgan Academy, Colombia, and Howard Prep. Most of her works were lost in the 40's, but were brought back in the 70's by Alice Walker. Their Eyes Were Watching God is a great informative and recreational story. it tells the tale of American hardships that some people can't understand. Hurston expresses the troubles and successes of African Americans in the early times of U.S. history.

My Name

Why your parents chose that name?

My parents chose my name because they liked it.

Who are you named after and why?

    Not named after anybody

    What does your name mean?

    Gift of God

What other names were under consideration?

  1. Matthew Robert - Mom
  2. Sean Patrick - Dad
  3. How you feel about your name?

I like my name, but there are others I like better. My mom told me that Matthew Patrick was a compromise between Matthew Robert, what she wanted to name me, and Sean Patrick, what my dad wanted to name me. I like the other compromise better - Sean Robert.

The ways other people respond to your name.

All of my family members call me Matthew, but I have always gone by Matt with my friends and in school.

My Dreams and Goals on the Horizon

My dream is to be successful, academically, in high school. i would like to continue taking honors courses and I would like to get into a good college, preferably one with a prestigious history. I want to go to business school and then maybe continue to law school. I know I can't always be perfect in school and sometimes I have trouble. I know that I can also always count on my parents to give me help if I ask for it. That is something I will always be grateful for.
